Georgia Primary Moved to May 19

Election Officials Move March 24 Presidential Primary and Special Election to May 19

Georgia officials have postponed the March 24 Presidential Primary and Special Election and closed all early voting locations due to health and safety reasons.

The election has been re-scheduled for May 19, the original date of the Georgia Primary and Special Election. The current registration deadline is April 20.

Georgia election officials began mailing absentee ballot request forms Monday, March 30, to the state’s 6.9 million active voters, making it easier for them to vote without having to show up in person.

Voters who fill out and return the request forms will then be mailed a ballot for the May 19 primary, which includes candidates for president, Congress, the Georgia General Assembly and county offices.

The mass mailing of absentee ballot request forms is an effort by Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to encourage remote voting during the coronavirus pandemic. Georgia voters will also have the option of voting in person on election day and during three weeks of early voting starting April 27. For specific details on this, please check with local news sources, as details are changing rapidly.

Georgians who have already cast their vote in person or by mail for the March 24 primary will be able to vote again in the May 19 primary for the elections already scheduled for that date.

If Georgians who have already cast their vote for the March 24 primary do not vote again in the May 19 primary, their votes for the presidential preference primary will still count.
